Montessori Materials - Wooden Toddler Puzzle Pack - First Shapes & Increasing Circle Puzzle

Our Montessori First Shapes wooden puzzle pack includes two of our most popular puzzles. They have both been designed for a young toddler who has developed a high level of eye-hand coordination and is now ready to master simple shapes.

This lovely wooden puzzle will build self-confidence, self-esteem and increase concentration. It will also provide first experiences with figure-ground concepts - the cognitive ability to separate pieces based on contrast.

An essential item in any Montessori pre-school home!

How to present the toy using the Montessori method:
  1. Place the puzzle on the floor in front of your baby. Working from left to right, grip the knob on the puzzle shape using your thumb and pointer finger. It’s beneficial to name the puzzle shape and be descriptive, for example ‘red square’
  2. Engage your child’s interest with a single word such as ‘look’ or ‘watch’
  3. Stabilize the base with one hand and with your other hand slowly remove the puzzle piece placing it beside the base
  4. Repeat this action with each puzzle piece
  5. Pick up and hold the first puzzle piece slightly above the base and rotate slowly to the left or right to demonstrate matching the shape exactly as it is lowered into the base
  6. Release and repeat with each puzzle piece
  7. Offer your child a turn

    Recommended age: 14 months +

Good for shape / size discrimination September 6, 2013

Jigsaw felt less substantial than I expected. Visible screw at back disappointing. Pieces and matching spaces not deep enough for satisfying engagement in correct location for a younger learner. Good for older children learning to sort shapes and relative sizes.

Great puzzle. January 2, 2013
Reviewer: Alison from Seaford, VIC Australia
My daughter has yet to figure out the differences between the shapes, but she enjoys taking the pieces out. I'm sure she'll figure out how to put them back in sooner or later! The item itself is very well constructed and the pieces fit perfectly.

I just love this puzzle, you cannot buy age appropriate puzzles in stores for toddlers so I was happy to find Classic baby.
